Slink Rat: See more, experience more, fail more, think more, learn more with Air Walker’s, Lynette and I manage to sneak in a slink…

slinkrat:

This is easily one of my favourite interviews that I’ve done on Slink Rat. Usually I just bang off some questions and say ‘write whatever you want, I won’t edit it down or anything’ and people don’t write a whole heap. Granted, it’s not the most stimulating way to do an interview. But fucking…

———————

This was a very interesting read, especially the part about differences in attitudes between Shanghai and Beijing bands. o.0

Hear several songs from the band at douban: Air Walker (云踪者), and check out their facebook.
(The links to both fb and weibo on their website are screwed up, directing to an error page. But you can look in the address bar and easily correct the address)

I’ll have a video coming next…

黃玠-如果連你都笑了 (by aagoodday)

Gonna interrupt the heavier music briefly, to let you know that A Good Day Records just uploaded all of the new Huang Jie aka Dadado (黃玠) album, Raining Night (下雨的晚上) to YouTube. =D
He has a 2-night stand coming up at Legacy Taipei on August 10th/11th.
Raining Night is his third album.

UPDATE: aagoodday took down the Huang Jie clips, but then immediately re-uploaded them, so I had to update this post with the new link. (In case you were wondering why the clip had stopped working)

Listen/purchase: Rainbow Mountain by Sparrow

Here is another band from the 1724 Records Bandcamp: the Beijing quartet Sparrow (文雀). This is instrumental rock, with some songs on the album going definitely into post-rock territory, e.g., the title track, Rainbow Mountain, that closes the 2012 release.
It really is a beautiful guitar rock album, nothing overly flashy, partnering with a super-solid rhythm section. A powerful live act, I imagine. (I’ll look around for some live video)
They’ve played shows as recently as June, but are planning to devote some down time the rest of the year to recording the next album.
By the way, the official website they list is just an error link, but they are updating their weibo microblogging site. (And the douban page above works, of course)

Following on from the previous post, here is a studio photo of guitarist Xiao Zhong (Pairs) and singer Cee Q (Marquee VII), aka the brand new duo Tom Cruise And Katie Homes (汤姆克鲁斯和凯蒂赫尔姆斯).
The English name they chose will lead to endless wayward Google searches, and the Chinese name, 汤姆克鲁斯和凯蒂赫尔姆斯…? More confusion! LOL, I guess they must have expected that to happen. =D
If you search on the phrase: “tomlovedkatie”, their douban page is the first link, but you have to insist on that exactly for Google. (Too late to reprint the new cd booklets, I guess, but might something to consider. It wouldn’t be the first time a new band immediately changed their name. *cough* Tiger Chocolate…Chocolate Tiger *cough*)

Listen/purchase: 你不爱我 by 汤姆克鲁斯和凯蒂赫尔姆斯

Here is a duo that *slinkrat just recommended to me: Tom Cruise And Katie Homes (汤姆克鲁斯和凯蒂赫尔姆斯).
They are *Xiao Zhong (from the band Pairs on guitar/keys) + Cee Q (from (Marquee VII, vocal/keys). The description on their site is very accurate: “pop/shoegazey/tiny bit of drone/odd folk”. I love her voice, even awash in reverb. (Seriously, what is it with shoegaze & reverb? o.0 Since the 90s, always that cathedral effect).
You can listen to the entire thing at douban and listen/PWYW at bandcamp.
I think some of these songs could also have been done as acoustic folk, but the slightly abrasive electric guitar makes them better suited for rock clubs. Throw in the background keyboards, and it’s quite a big sound for a duo.
This album was just recorded in July and released a few days ago. They have their debut gig coming up on August 9th, opening for Sophie Koh at YuYinTang in Shanghai. 16 mins are also on the bill, so that will be a great night for fans of female vocals. I wish I could be there! =D

*Yes, blogger/interviewer slink rat is one half of this duo, and also in the bands Pairs and Hu Jia Hu Wei. Where does he find the time?!
