Lots of fingerstyle acoustic guitarists uploading clips labelled: Thomas Leeb 2016台灣演奏會開場甄選; in anticipation of Leeb’s 2 April shows in Taiwan. Maybe to be considered as an opening act? (I’m not seeing any indication that it is a contest, but there are a lot of videos if you Google search “Thomas Leeb 2016台灣演奏會開場甄選”)  Thomas Leeb

許綺娟 Chi Chuan Hsu is the only artist I’ve seen that posted an original song for the Thomas Leeb thing, and this is a beautiful piece!  =D

Chi Chuan was at Eidos Cafe on Saturday:

Besides her solo performing and teaching, she is also a member of Rainy Berries 莓雨樂團 (on indefinite hiatus), and occasionally plays with AJ Fender in Electric and Wood 電與木的交錯. Here they are at Riverside Cafe last fall, playing one of Chi Chuan’s songs:

Follow the clip back to YT for more from both this set and Chi Chuan solo.  =D

想法超齡的長髮大男孩 ── 麋先生主唱聖皓 – Blow 吹音樂

Profile of 吳聖皓, lead singer for 麋先生 Mixer.  To me, 聖皓 is a throwback to the ‘Lead Singer’ archetype of the 1970s.

Maybe it’s the hair, LOL, but really he just reminds me of certain classic rock singers I grew up listening to. Guys like Ian Gillan (from Deep Purple) or Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin).  So many modern bands, if you see a photo of them on stage, you can’t even tell who the singer is. There’s no presence, let alone flamboyance.  It’s hard to find someone with the voice & personality to be the focal point of your band. I guess that’s why they invented the term ‘shoegaze’  =D

Of course, lead singers can be polarizing figures, especially if the rest of the band is made to seem diminished by comparison.  I never get that impression with Mixer. Let’s hear a song:

Some emo-math rock from the Singapore trio Forests.  (from their 2015 ep, available also at bandcamp)

Not to be confused with Forests 森林 or The Forest Party 森林ㄌㄜˋ園. Those are Taipei bands.

Niki Koh, the drummer from SG band Bear Culture is also in Forests, and will tour with them in Japan in March:

Live Wire: A brief history of (Taiwan) punk – Taipei Times

Joe Henley from the Taipei Times with a look at the history of Taiwan’s punk rock scene. I had no idea that LTK Commune 濁水溪公社 had been around that long (1990).

Joe also draws a distinction from old school punk to what he calls ‘happy punk’.
