“大事发声”第二期:魏如萱,旅行团

Hi there!  That stream I was telling you about in the Waa post last night is available. It looks like the full stream is 2 hours long, but you can also watch in song-length clips.

HD quality video & audio from The Next Big Thing TW.   This was shot on a studio soundstage, no live audience. All clips are labelled with Waa’s name, but I dunno why.   The first 50 minutes or so is full set by Beijing band 旅行团 (The Life Journey), then the next segment is a conversation between Waa and Sandee Chan 陳珊妮. Maybe the idea of the series is promoting non-TW indies in Taiwan, or China-TW cross-promotion?

That’s as far as I’ve watched so far.   Life Journey get interviewed by Sandee.

UPDATE:  I just found a description at Sohu Entertainment, and also a writeup at the StreetVoice facebook.

Life Journey tour of China, late May through June

UPDATE: Waa and her band play a set in the latter half of the video:

Sandee Chan 陳珊妮

Riin (The Girl and The Robots) covering a Sandee Chan 陳珊妮 song, with Yi-Ching (依錚依靜 Yi-Cheng Yi-Ching) on guitar, and 小蟲 on electronic drums.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Yi-Ching play electric before.  =D

The gig was for charity and NO.1 MUSIC has the entire set. You can see in the photo below that the video was shot from an angle that would miss the drummer completely, LOL.

3.True Love Waits (Radiohead cover)
4.單人探戈
5.完美 (陳珊妮 cover)

CNNGo TV – Taiwan

I happened across some travel videos on CNN web site (http://travel.cnn.com/cnngo). They have done some really cool features on Kaohsiung 2014 and Taipei 2012, and they make excellent use of Taiwan indie music.
As a matter of fact, in the Taipei clip, Sandee Chan acts as a tour guide, with her music in the background, and Crowd Lu is interviewed and plays a song. (Gladys Tsai has a tune that plays in the beginning of the piece)
In the Kaohsiung video, the soundtrack included 4 songs from Elephant Gym, 2 from Fire EX., 3 from Youth Banana, and 2 from Tiger Huang. If I’m not mistaken, I believe all of the bands used in the Kaohsiung video are local. Nice touch by whoever produced this at CNNGo!
I highly recommend both clips, not only for the music, but also if you have any interest at all in getting a look at the cities that get referenced so very often on this blog. =D

From 2009 at Riverside Live House, this is Sandee Chan singing City, by Deserts Chang.
Deserts came onstage after the song, and was very emotional. I wonder if she was surprised that Sandee covered her song? In any case, it certainly seemed to overwhelm her at the moment. (LOL, once she got the mic in her hand, she didn’t wanna give it back!)
Maybe one of my helpful readers can tell me why Deserts is crying?
——————————————
Got help from dramarathon; the sign being held up says, ‘F**K’.
“Deserts’ speech after that: (this seems right after City album came out) the whole reason I went to learn piano, and to learn how to make music better is all because of Sandee, who she’s just been an ardent fan of. Sandee was the person who showed her that music wasn’t just about talent and recognition by others, but also about how the process makes herself feel and learn. So I wanna dedicate album to Sandee, no one has treated me like this before. (she seems drunk n depressed at that time)”
Another helpful comment came in at the same time, from butaneandthebeast:
“Deserts is crying, can’t stop, Sandee tells her to hold the sign up in front of her face (it says fuck). Then D says “I’ll tell you why I’m crying This person *points to S* is why I learnt piano & improved my music. She showed me that music isn’t only about fame also about creating & feeling about myself. I’d wished that I could make good songs, & now Sandee’s covering them. So I’m dedicating this album to her, she’s the first person to be like this with me”
Thanks so much to dramarathon and butaneandthebeast! =D
