魏如萱 Waa Wei did some reading and some singing at an event called Inside Out: TEAM International Museum Day Program

No idea what she was reading.  Besides Han Likang on guitar, there’s Jack Ko 柯遵毓 playing towel-muted percussion (he’s got a guitar back behind him as well.)  Jack plays bass with a number of bands, and he’s played with Waa a bit.

Lots of TW gigs for Jack on bass, but according to his fb, he Studied Performance: Percussion at Berklee College of Music.  I know he subbed on drums briefly with Queen Suitcase (and CosmosPeople, if I remember correctly).    Versatile guy!  Some of the bands he plays with are not very busy (for example Sadon and the Fader very rarely gig), or don’t usually use a full band.   He’s also played with Misi Ke, Sandee Chan, Crowd Lu, Night Keepers, Kowen

Jack has both drum covers and bass covers on his YT channel.   =D

Interview with 苏运莹 Su Yunying 苏苏, mostly about putting together her new album with producer Chien-Chi Chen 陳建騏

She gave him simple guitar-vocal demos, and she was thoroughly pleased at the resulting arrangements by Shao-Yong Huang 黃少雍韩立康 Han Likang, JerryC, 陳君豪 Howe Chan and others.

魏如萱 Waa played Legacy Taipei on Saturday, part of the Voice Up 讚聲後援會 series.  (This must have sold out early on, because there’s no promo or even mention that I saw, huh!) So beautiful!  *Full concert video of Waa Wei 魏如萱 and Lovely Baby from last fall at Legacy Taipei.   More theatrical than most of the live Waa videos we’ve posted. (but not as big of a spectacle as the Hide and Seek concert at Taipei Arena in May of 2014 – gonna be difficult to ever top that!)

Anyway, Waa is in beautiful voice, and the set list is a well-thought out mix of her dramatic songs, quiet songs, and there’s a fun interval of her cute tunes halfway thru the show. (Including the crazy 吼喲 ‘Hǒu yō hǒu yō hǒu yō hǒu yō hǒu yō hǒu yō hǒu yō’.)   =D

Another thing about Waa is that her shows have many familiar ‘must play’ numbers, but the band keep these songs fresh with new (sometimes strange!) arrangements.

There’s a guest appearance by cellist Hang Liu 劉涵 (Infancy 隱分子樂團), a cover of cousin Kowen 柯智棠’s 你不真的想流浪.

*the only thing missing is an encore, unless that was edited out of the video?

From her debut album Ming Ming, released at the end of 2015, 蘇運瑩 aka 苏苏 Su Yunying aka Su Su.  Beautiful song, very creative clip!   =D

Spotted this on *黃少雍 Huang Shao-yong’s fb, he did the arrangement, and posted something like the ‘song demo only had a few chords’, so he obviously had a big hand in how the track turned out.

Actually, looking at the album credits on mojim.com, there is substantial TW musician involvement, with **韩立康 Han Likang arranging a song, 陳君豪 Howe Chan (fr. Buddha Jump) doing 2 arrangements. Guitarist 董运昌 Dong Yun-Chang arranged a song. JerryC arr. 2 tracks.

Chien-Chi Chen 陳建騏 (forgood music/SONY Music TW) produced the album and also arranged a song.  I would imagine that’s how so much of the work was steered to all of these familiar TW indie names.

SONY TW album page.  She’s connected to Bravo Music, I think that is through the Sing My Song show in China.  Su Su wrote all of the songs on her debut.

This is a treat!  2 songs from Ellen Joyce Loo  盧凱彤 Lu Kai Tong (卢凯彤) at Megaport 2016.   Happy Birthday to Ellen, 30 years old today.  =D

With 韩立康 Han Likang (Coconuts, Waa Wei, Sandee Chan) on guitar, Jack Ko 柯遵毓 (Misi Ke, Sadon, Sandee Chan, Ko Chih Tang, etc.) on bass, and… I don’t recognize the drummer. Any body got a name for the fellow in the striped sweater?

image

Right after her set, Ellen went over to another stage and joined ChthoniC 閃靈, I’m gonna need to see a clip of this!:

By the way, you can see the set grid at the Megaport link up above.

瑪啡因 Maffine are back with another cover, this time a lovely version of 魏如萱 Waa Wei’s-飛鳥 Stary Birds, from No Crying. (2011). Sharon’s clarinet is a gentle, yet potent weapon.  =D

I’ve told this before, but if you look up the lyrics on Mojim, not only will you find info about the song (e.g. 飛鳥: words by Waa, music by Waa & Han Likang from Lovely Baby) but you will also usually find a bunch of videos – studio, live & covers.  Really worth a look when you are curious about a particular song or album.  It’s been very helpful to me, for sure.

image

Just look at the Mojim video page for this song, I had to super-shrink the page view just to fit them all in!!  Besides many clips of Waa playing the song live over the last several years, there are versions by Emily Pu fr. Ricing Star, Ellen Lu Kaitong, Light Engine, Lele, Palapelit, Queen Wei, and on and on.  So many peeps trying their hand on this gorgeous song!  =D

椰子!! Coconuts with 4 versions in 1 MV of their song, 瘋狂的醫院 Crazy Hospital.  =D

The plot of the MV changes in every version, especially in the last ver.

1st version: full song. 2nd: no vocal version, with different camera angles. Apay plays the nurse.

3rd: no vocal / no guitar version, more focus on bass player (Chouc Lin 子喬 (林子喬) from 1976樂團)  4th: drums / remix version

p.s. you’ll probably recognize guitarist Han Likang and drummer Peter Lai, both also play in Waa Wei and Lovely Baby.  And that’s 林宥嘉 Yoga Lin playing the mad scientist.  =D

Full credits back at YT.
