Queen Sea Big Shark

Queen Sea Big Shark announced on fb that you can stream their new album in full at Xiami.  And of course many of us are blocked…

But the band just posted this:

“Sorry for the last post Xiami’s not available in the US. Please try *Netease music here: http://music.163.com/#/album?id=3316050
And mail order CD version on Modernsky: http://modernsky.com/index.php/Records/info/id/194.html
We will also release the vinyl version very soon!”

The album is titled Beijing Surfers’ Adventure, and it has 11 songs. The Chinese title might be 心要野, I keep seeing that in brackets.

*UPDATE: I can’t get the Netease player to work, I think it is region-restricted, just like Xiami. [由于版权保护,您所在的地区暂时无法使用.]  *sigh*

You can see the album-tour promo & schedule at Modern Sky, first show is next Friday in Kunming.

2 really good bands from China in this video from StreetVoice TV & The Next Big Thing: Queen Sea Big Shark 后海大鲨鱼 and 逃跑計劃 *Escape Plan. =D

During their set, Queen Sea Big Shark got help from Balaz Lee on harmonica, tom-tom and gtr.   *Escape Plan are formerly known as Perdel. weibo, facebook.

I have no idea when this was filmed, but it was posted to StreetVoiceTV YT channel in August of this year.

hello! i wanted to ask for band recs. i like queen suitcase, dabang, queen sea big shark and yuguo a lot. could you recommend me similar mandarin bands? also i really like passepied and sakanaction, these two japanese bands. are there similar mandarin bands like them too? thank you and love your blog!!

Hi there, thank you for the question!  =D

You like female vocalists, and a few of these bands you list are danceable rock, so in that vein, I recommend My Skin Against Your Skin 激膚樂團, P!SCOThe White Eyes 白目樂團The Girl and the Robots 女孩與機器人Astro Bunny 原子邦妮. These last two are more electropop than the others. You could also try No Money No Honey, a band that mixes humor with their dance rock.  =)

Queen Suitcase 皇后皮箱 do a throwback style, with heavy Beatles, Britpop, Motown influences – I think you might like Wonfu 旺福, they have male & female lead vocal.

Hope you find some things you like!

fyeahcindie:

Just read about Queen Sea Big Shark coming out with their third album in May, and getting ready to do some festival gigs.   Check out the interview and one more video at That’s magazine.  (That’s Shanghai, That’s Beijing, That’s Hong Kong, etc.)

This song is a few years old, but it might be on the new album. You can hear a bunch more of their songs at the douban band link above.

The band just linked to their excellent new single (后海冲浪手) over on Xiami, which is out of reach for many of us, but you can also hear it on their weibo!  (You will probably have to sign in or sign up to listen. I had to sign in. Anyway, it’s free, and if you wanna closely follow mainland bands, it’s a good thing to do.)
