Hi Gabrielle, I work with MTV Asia and came across your blog as I was doing some research for a competition we are currently running, called Project Aloft Star, amplified by MTV. This is a singer-songwriter search with a grand prize of US$10,000 per cluster (clusters are Southeast Asia, Greater China – HK, Taiwan, China – India and Korea. Your blog looks like it targets exactly the type of people we are trying to reach. Could we connect on mail? I can’t attach our website link here.

Hi there Anon.  I’m not Gabrielle, and I’m not sure where you got that name.  o.0

I see the Project Aloft Star web site: http://projectaloftstar.mtvasia.com/

There are lots of details about the contest, I’ll try to summarize:

Various entrees from ‘cluster’ regions of India, Southeast Asia, China, Korea – hm… no entrees from Taiwan yet.

Artists are welcome to enter (submit a song) from now until July 25.

First round of voting runs from July 29 until August 22.  The finalists compete at their region on August 26th, and then the winners announced in mid-September.

Each winning entry from each cluster will walk away with USD $10,000 respectively.

Voters who help us decide, during the voting phase, stand a chance to win USD $1,000 per cluster as well!

Clusters:

  • Southeast Asia – Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand
  • Greater China – China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau
  • India
  • Korea

p.s. if you see Gabrielle, tell her I said ‘hello’, LOL.   =)

YouTube has blocks certain music from my country, and a lot of music from Hong Kong is hard to find. Do you know where I might be able to listen in the USA?

Hi there!   I am also in the USA, and occasionally get blocked from certain things.  (the worst for me is *xiami.com)

If you are are blocked from some HK things, maybe you can try searching on one of the Chinese video sites? (http://www.youku.com/http://www.tudou.com/http://v.qq.com/http://www.56.com/)  I’ve never searched for HK bands on those video sites, but I’ve seen many mainland bands that I couldn’t find on YouTube.

Other than that, you could try searching away from the official record label YouTube channels.  Lots of people upload audio rips to YT (no video, just a still frame or homemade slide show, etc.)

Another thing to try is using VPN (virtual private network) software to disguise your location.   A bunch of different ones were just reviewed by PC Magazine.  I don’t have any experience using a VPN, but I know we have some readers who use a VPN to use xiami.

If you are not looking for videos, then you might find the audio on sites such as SoundCloud, Spotify, Bandcamp, etc.  Just google search with the artist and the site. For example: 何韻詩 soundcloud or 何韻詩 spotify, etc.

*Regarding xiami.com: a lot of audio that would normally be blocked if you tried to listen directly from xiami will play if it has been embedded on weibo. So include weibo in your artist search!

Hope some of that was helpful!   =)

hi , what do you think about this kind of music ?soundcloud>birdwingbutterfly

Hi there!   I just listened to their ’this is our demo’ over at SoundCloud. Nice stuff!  =D

A couple of those songs (Empty Bench & That Someone) are reminiscent of some other Indonesian bands I like: Mocca and White Shoes & The Couples Company. (especially Mocca)

I don’t see any activity on the Birdwing Butterfly facebook, are any of the members still active in music?

Hi, Would High Jinx classify to be on F Yeah Chinese Indie. High Jinx is an Electropop duo based out of Toronto, Canada. The band features Ranny Lee (Asian singer) on vocals and Mark “Moby” Holman performing the music. Their EP – Cut and Run is on Spotify. Here are links to Sound Cloud and Youtube.

Hi there!   I really like the sound of the songs I’m hearing on the High Jinx SoundCloud   =D

Is Ranny Lee Korean/Canadian?  I don’t cover anything K-indie because there are really so many excellent sites that follow the K-indies, plus the Korean Indie Music Lovers facebook group. (I’m a member there, so if Ranny is ‘CBK’, I’ll gladly post about you there)

FYCI is obviously Chinese indie-centric, but I do occasionally expand to include Indonesian and Thai artists, etc., countries that don’t really have much music-blog love on tumblr.

High Jinx official site. (go there and check out the MV for Human, that’s a fun song!)  =D

Do you have any recommendations of songs sung in Cantonese? It’s really hard to find any good ones.

Hi there!   Just some random recs, because I don’t know what styles you like:

Say You Care dreampop-slightly emo rock: https://sayyoucare.bandcamp.com/track/–2

Yuki Lovey 勞嘉怡 dreamy indie-folk pop, this one is gorgeous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtFGwPxaXXA

2-halves 芊彤說 芊蕾說 sisters playing sweet folk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1JSrT6rkOA

Ellen Joyce Loo 盧凱彤 Lu Kai Tong (卢凯彤)  has released songs in both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Denise Ho / HOCC 何韻詩 (you probably already know about her.)

[Looking at my Hong Kong bands list, I realize that it is almost all female vocals. Many of the HK bands I have with male or female singers sing mostly or all in English]

Hopefully you will enjoy some of the things I linked. Let me know if you want to narrow it down to a particular style. (ballad, punk, metal, etc.)

Hi, I’m glad I found a blog covering various Chinese Indie music! I live in Shenzhen, China and recently released an EP. If you like what you hear you could be the first Chinese music blog to debut it :) You can check it out at sessymusic on bandcamp (album: Feeling Bad, Feeling Better) If you prefer something on the pop/folk side, I’d suggest “Sea Breeze”. If you prefer pop/punk I suggest “Lost my Head” Contact me if you have any questions. Cheers -Sessy

Hey Sessy, thank you for getting in touch. =D

I enjoyed the EP, it’s a good collection of songs!  Did you play all of the instruments? (I see on your YT you played the drums)

Hi! If you watch the video for 徐佳瑩-明天的事情, she introduces the band members shortly after she begins the song the first time. I think the first guitarist’s name is Chen Ji Hong? (Sorry I am bad at pin-yin) and the other guitarist is Hsu Pi?? Hopefully you can understand/know who these people are. I’m not sure I helped at all haha

Thank you so much for the help!  =D   If you could give me what you hear in Chinese, I can look it up on facebook?   (I may even have the names in my band-database already, but sometimes only in Chinese characters, if I haven’t seen the name romanized)

By the way, that is so funny the way she stopped the song like that. Was it just because she forgot to introduce the band?  =D

Here is the link, in case anybody wants to see that clip:
